The Utah Transit Authority’s commuter light rail, TRAX, runs on rails and an overhead cable. Riders boarding and exiting TRAX in the Free Fare Zone do not need to purchase a pass. The Free Fare Zone stops at seven downtown transit stations where one may visit the following sites:

Beehive House

Discover how Brigham Young and his family lived in the 1800s by taking a free 30-minute tour of the Beehive House, which is open Monday through Saturday 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. The house, built in 1854 and a National Historic Landmark, is beautifully restored with period furnishings.

Brigham Young Historic Park is a beautiful green area just east of Temple Square. It has a pioneer feel and features statue memorials and a water wheel spinning through the free-flowing City Creek. Tuesday and Friday free evening concerts bring in local and internationally known musicians.

Cathedral Church of St. Mark

Visit and tour St. Mark's, known as a place of welcome and sanctuary. With exquisite stained glass windows designed by art glass stalwarts Tiffany and Connick, the cathedral is a combination of simplicity and beautiful spiritual symbolism. The wood carvings and metal work, as well as the windows, tell stories of spiritual traditions.

Enjoy an afternoon walk in the scenic City Creek Park. A small but historically important mountain stream flowing from City Creek Canyon and across part of the city moves smoothly into the Jordan River, which empties into the Great Salt Lake.

Eagle Gate

Built in 1859, the gate is a 76-foot arch with a 4000 pound eagle with a wing-span of over 20 feet on top of the arch. Originally, it served as the entrance to Brigham Young's property and led beyond that to City Creek Canyon.

Home of the Utah Jazz basketball team and Arena Football League’s Utah Blaze, the arena hosts other events, including a variety of concerts and special exhibitions. During the 2002 Winter Olympics the arena hosted the figure skating and short track speed skating competitions.

The Family History Library is the largest genealogical library in the world. The library, founded in 1894 to gather genealogical records and assist members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with their family history and genealogical research, is open to the public at no charge. As a starting point in compiling their family histories, beginning researchers may want to visit the FamilySearch Center in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.

Governor’s Mansion

Take a walking tour of the historic Kearns Mansion, home to the Utah Governor. In this architectural treasure, glimpse the gold-leafed dome, see Teddy Roosevelt's hat rack, and ponder the mystery of the four medallions on a 45-minute guided tour of the Mansion's first floor. Note: All public tours are arranged upon request and must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance.

Joseph Smith Memorial Building

The Joseph Smith Memorial Building is one of Temple Square's most popular destinations, housing a theater, two restaurants (The Garden and The Roof), and the FamilySearch Center. Building tours are available Monday through Saturday 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.

Mormon Pioneer Memorial Monument

Dedicated to more than 6,000 pioneers who died making the journey from Illinois to Utah and other parts of the world between 1847 and 1869, the Mormon Pioneer Memorial Monument is the gravesite of Brigham Young and other early Mormon leaders. The monument, just east of Temple Square, is open to the public daily.

The Church History Museum tells the story of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through educational exhibits and programs. It includes collections and displays of Latter-day Saint art and worldwide artifacts. This museum maintains both permanent galleries and changing temporary exhibits on special themes. Admission is free.

Olympic Legacy Plaza

The Plaza is located at the north end of The Gateway. Be sure to watch the shooting misty waters of the Olympic Snowflake Fountain dive and dance during a coordinated music program shown every 30 minutes. Just behind the fountain is a tribute to Olympic heroes. Etched in stone are the names of the over 28,000 Olympic volunteers.

Pioneer Memorial Museum

Celebrate Utah's pioneer heritage by exploring the six floors of artifact exhibits. Bracelets and spoons belonging to preeminent polygamist Parley P. Pratt are among the displays at this museum of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Admission is free, and the gift shop offers everything from toothpaste-flavored saltwater taffy to seagull refrigerator magnets.

Located in the old Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Depot constructed in 1910, the Utah State Historical Society is known for ghosts. The most famous ghost haunting the building is that of the woman in the purple dress. Usually visitors may see her near the Rio Grande Cafe, a restaurant located in the Depot. The museum also includes the Utah Railroad Depots Photograph Collection and hosts a permanent exhibit of Utah's unique cultural, industrial, and social development, and a number of changing exhibits. In addition, the museum includes the Utah Information Center, a research facility for writers, historians, and genealogists.

The Salt Lake Art Center hosts 12-15 exciting international, national, and local art exhibits in its three galleries: the Main Gallery, the Project Gallery, and the Street Level Gallery. It incorporates a regular series of informal gallery talks featuring artists, curators, humanists, and others who speak to issues examined in the exhibitions on display. The Salt Lake Art Center exhibitions and education programs are free of charge.

Social Hall Heritage Museum

Visit the Social Hall Heritage Museum to learn about the early settlers of Salt Lake City and their enjoyment of music, dancing, lectures, and relaxation with friends. Discovered in 1991, the remains of the original Social Hall, built under the administration of Brigham Young, today house the museum, which preserves these remains. It is open to the public Monday through Friday 10:00 am to 9:00 pm and Saturday 10:00 am to 7:00 pm.

The beautifully landscaped ten-acre Temple Square in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City is one of Utah's most visited attractions. Centerpiece of the Square is the six-spired granite Salt Lake Temple, and adjacent to this imposing edifice is the domed Tabernacle, home of the famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the great Tabernacle organ. Take a complimentary tour, and see interactive videos, films, Old and New Testament paintings, and an 11-foot replica of Thorvaldsen's Christus. Temple Square is open 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, and visitors pay no charge for admission.

Union Pacific Depot

The Union Pacific Depot is a spacious building on the western edge of downtown. Built from 1908 to 1909, it includes The Depot restaurant and gives attention to a more prosperous era in the history of American railroad travel. The sandstone building, constructed in French Second Empire style, includes a terrazzo floor and stained glass windows. Murals adorn the ceilings. The main lobby serves as an entrance to the Gateway District.

Utah's Capitol building, an elegant architectural masterpiece, is located on a hill overlooking downtown Salt Lake City. The view from the front steps is of the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountains with Salt Lake City below. On the 40-acre site are beautifully maintained and sculpted lawns, shrubs, trees, and flowerbeds. On the west grounds is a Vietnam Memorial. Guided tours of the Capitol are given hourly from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
